Bill Plaschke Must Go

5 July 2008

I can’t even begin to tell you how much Bill Plaschke annoys me. The guy uses his platform to push an agenda that, for all practical purposes, would do more harm than good for the Dodgers. As a Giants fan, I should love him… but as a free-thinking, semi-intelligent individual, I simply can’t. His time, like so many other sports writers who are unwilling to change, has come. Bill Plaschke must go.

Forgive me for taking a page out of the FIRE JOE MORGAN book… but I can’t take it anymore.

From his most recent article which addresses why the Angels are good, and the Dodgers are not:

“Who is a ballplayer? Who is not? Who can continue to grow here? Who will not?

Blake DeWitt, he’s a ballplayer.”

Yes. Blake DeWitt, who has hit .184 and slugged .230 since June 1, keep him around.

“How do they find a bunch of other guys who play the game the right way like he does?

Some of their other youngsters have much more talent, but, having been coddled since double A, they might never become ballplayers here.

It may be time to trade some of that flashy talent for somebody who understands the fundamentals. And, yes, once again, Matt Kemp’s name is being whispered through Dodgers offices.”

Right. Who needs power, speed, and raw-talent when you can have someone who plays the game “right”? Trade Kemp for David Eckstein, straight up. That’ll make Plaschke happy.

“The Angels have a culture that believes in winning over statistics, winning over awards, winning over everything.

It’s a culture where the Angels have committed seven fewer errors, grounded into eight fewer double plays, and do all the little things that are hidden beneath the numbers. “

You said it yourself Bill… 8 fewer double plays, 7 fewer errors.. those are numbers, aren’t they? Oh, no.. those are things hidden beneath the numbers. Got it.

“The Angels lose John Lackey and Kelvim Escobar, and they just get better.”

The Dodgers lose Andrew Jones and Rafael Furcal, and they fall apart.”

Did… did he just say Andruw Jones? He did, didn’t he.. holy crap, he said Andruw Jones. If you were a sports editor, and in an interview, an aspiring sports writer said something about the Dodgers falling apart after Andruw Jones hit the DL, would you hire him/her? Or would you end the interview right there, say “thanks for coming in”, and never think on that individual again? Yeah, me too. Plaschke must go.
