anger, frustration, and bitterness towards the ownership
18 June 2007Peter Magowan and the Giants’ ownership keep looking for a way to pass the buck on this disaster they call the ‘07 San Francisco Giants. When asked how Giants fans would react to a “rebuilding” stage, Magowan said:
“If we were to announce like the Cleveland Indians did a few years ago that we were going to get younger, play a lot of young players and in three or four years be really good, that kind of announcement would not go down very well with our fans… But there is a risk in announcing, ‘Expect us to lose 90 games the next three years, then we’re going to be really good.’ . . . I don’t think we have to do that. As long as we have the starting pitching that we have, the Giants can compete.”
What’s most frustrating about Magowan’s attitude is that he completely ignores how awful the team is in ‘07! Three 90-loss seasons with a plan is a hell-of-a-lot better than three wasted attempts at a competitive team at the cost of the future. Is there a plan for 2008? 2009? Beyond? Or is the management simply banking on the young pitching staff and free-agent acquisitions?
As a fan, and I believe I speak for a large majority of fans… even if the team stinks, I want hope more than anything else. There is no hope for 2007, and it only gets worse in 2008. It’s painful to see an organization run so terribly in the shadows of one run so well across the bay.
I would offer this piece of advise to Peter Magowan and the Giants ownership/management: Stop looking for someone to blame for the ‘07 disaster, and hire some staff who have an idea of how to field a winning team. Suck it up and admit that Barry Bonds has carried you and the entire franchise for many years, and then create a plan for how to win without him. If that plan includes three 90-loss seasons, so be it. At least there will be hope for a better future. Right now, as it stands, many 90+ loss seasons are staring us in the face, and there’s no glimmer of hope in any of our eyes.
