another close loss
10 June 2007After today’s horrifically frustrating defeat, that’s 23 losses by two or fewer runs in 2007. Only two teams over the last twenty seasons dropped more than 23 close games in their first 62 overall (’03 Tigers, ‘93 Mets). The 2003 Tigers wound up losing 119 games, and the ‘93 Mets lost 103. That’s some pretty terrible company.
It’s also time to start tracking the Giants offensive futility, with a historic perspective. San Francisco was shutout today for the third time in its last five games. You have to go back to June of 1992 to find another five game stretch in which the Giants were shutout three times.
Just looking at the boxscore of today’s game… SIX position players the Giants sent to the plate have on-base percentages BELOW .300. Frandsen (.293), Aurilia (.284), Feliz (.293), Ortmeier (.296), Vizquel (.289), and Sweeney (.271). That’s unbelievable!
